Is this a branded computer if so make and model
If you have the XP CD will it boot to that and load the Recovery Console.
Does it have a recovery partition, usually found on branded ie: Dell etc.

What's up thanks for the response!
Yes it is Gateway brand win xp media center edition 2005 gt404 pc
I have the xp operating system disc. What do I do when loading recovery console?
can you give me a quick play by play?
and yes it does have recovery options available, but I'm not really sure how to go about using it without losing data, so I've never really tried it out.

Before we go to the windows recovery/repair options which will most likely be a soft recovery when all the programs and your personal files SHOULD remain intact, and the destructive recovery which is just a fresh install of windows; lets try the recovery console.
When you get into it run "chkdsk /r" note space between chkdsk and /.
See this for your guidance.

and another one with more detail by way of images

NOTE do not use the example shown as "chkdsk /r/p.
r includes p and if you read it carefully you will notice that the r and p are alternatives.
