well, i know we both decided this wasnt the problem, but i started looking today and found out my motherboard (Asus M3A78-T), has GREATLY improved its BIOS and customer support. i found that a new bios update even supports AM3 cpus, which werent even out when i bought the board. so i decided to update my bios, which ran much better than the last time i tried, and since then, it has picked it up fine everytime, on both vista and linux. however, i believe the XP is my fault, i have tried so many programs and used it so long it has just became cluttered, which is why i got vista. and honestly this was my first build, so i could have set a setting wrong in my bios, and when it updated it reset to default. im just happy it works better again :)

Really it was the bios all this time? Well I am very surprised to say the least. The reason I didn't believe it was the bios was because nothing else was showing signs of it. I am sorry for that honestly.
