file recovery program for crashed ext hard drive

My external hard drive fell off a bookshelf and now doesn't act very nice and asks me if i want to format it when I plug the hard drive in. I recovered a few photos previously when I was looking for something on it, but now can't remember what program I used. mose free that I try to download have a hard time recognizing the drive, etc. any suggestions.
