Hi hayesp,

You have two probable infections - VX2 and Ceres. Lets tackle VX2 first and then we will take care of Ceres.

Print out the following instructions or copy them into a text file on your desktop for easy accessibility.

Copy Hijack This into a separate directory, preferably C:\HJT. This will enable Hijack This to create and save backups, in case they are required.

Download the program l2mfix and save it in a new folder on your desktop. Run the program and install it, preferable in the same folder on the desktop.

Run l2mfix.bat and choose option 1 i.e. Run Find log.

Post the l2mfix log file here and we will proceed depending on the contents of the log file.

Hi hayesp,

Looks like the PC is clear of VX2. we shall now take care of ceres.dll.

Print out the following instructions or copy them into a text file on your desktop for easy accessibility.

Copy Hijack This into a separate directory, preferably C:\HJT. This will enable Hijack This to create and save backups, in case they are required.

1. Create Registry File

For the purposes of the fix, you to create a registry file, which will be merged with your Registry to delete the entries made by the malware. Please follow the instructions for creating and saving the files very carefully,

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop.

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CeresDll.CeresDllObj.1]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CeresDll.CeresDllObj]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{BB0D5ADC-028D-4185-9288-722DDCE2C757}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Typelib\{92DAF5C1-2135-4E0C-B7A0-259ABFCD3904}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ceres]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CeresDll.CeresDllObj]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CeresDll.CeresDllObj.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Interface\{BB0D5ADC-028D-4185-9288-722DDCE2C757}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Typelib\{92DAF5C1-2135-4E0C-B7A0-259ABFCD3904}]

[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\CLASSES\Ceres]

Close Notepad.

2. Run HijackThis

Click on "Config...", "Misc Tools", "Open process manager". Select the following files and click on "Kill process" (if they are there). Answer Yes to the "Are you sure..." question.desktop.exe
edmond.exe
ffisearch.exe
Scan again using Hijack This. We need to fix the following entries -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nsvcin] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\n20050308.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [y7WpU3m] c:\windows\system32\y7WpU3m.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4soO36X] ulitwiz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoLoader4F7k1IKKJaaZ] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ulitwiz.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LB7ERWbES] swpcui.exe

Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix Checked.

3. Correct the Registry

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Restart your computer in safe mode (tap the F8 key repeadtedly when the PC is starting up).

4. Delete the Rogue files

Click on Start ---> Run. Paste

regsvr32 /u Ceres.dll

and click OK.

Delete the following files/folders (if present) in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32
o delprot.ini
o delprot.log
o desktop.exe
o buddy.exe
o isrvs (delete the entire folder)

Delete the following files
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Delprot.sys
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\n20050308.exe
C:\windows\system32\y7WpU3m.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ulitwiz.exe
ulitwiz.exe
swpcui.exe - to locate this files use the search function of windows, use the Click on Start ---> Search.

Delete the following files/folder (if present) in C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Desktop
o anal exploits.url
o big [bleep] school for 2.95.url
o evidence eraser.lnk
o popup blocker stops popups.lnk
o spyware avenger.lnk
o virus hunter security.lnk
o your platinum visa.lnk

Reboot the PC normally and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi hayesp,

I figured out what changes need to be carried but to be on the safe side, can you post a fresh Hijack This log here ??

This way we can ensure that the fix is fine tuned for any recent changes.

Hi Hayesp,

We got the files and your PC is clean. :tazz:

Now that your PC is clean I strongly recommend that you flush out earlier system restore points (which may be infected) and create new one. The procedure for that is given below in Step 8.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE
You should take these steps to ensure that your system remains clean.

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
