Anyone using Smoothwall, the linux-based hardware firewall? I've been considering converting an old PC into a firewall using Smoothwall and wanted others' thoughts on it.
It seems pretty easy to install and run. Any one have problems with it? It'll be the gateway for a wireless network.

Hi delawaredrew

Im smoothwall user now for a year.

Smooth Wall is a great linux system when you want to transform a comp into a firewall, gateway ... etc that you put place between internet and LAN.

I would suggest having a comp with at least 233 MHz and at least 128 Mb for it to work properly.

Altought it very good for wired based lan with wireless it still has a few issues.
I suggest that you give a try you might find guides at their websites for WiFi networks.

But from my side smooth wall is a great system, i had a 4 month succesful uptime.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

I have been using the Smoothwall Express 2 firewall as well, for about 12 months. It runs like a charm. I use the hardware firewal in conjunction with another software firewall. The software firewall has taken no hits so far from the outside world !

My question is, I cannot upload the latest patch (Patch 7) for smoothy. It is downloaded from the net in winzip form, & then the extraction process goes to pooh. I get this message when I try to upload the file.."This is not an authorised update, or your patchlist is out of date"...

My patch list is up to date. I have all 6 previous patches uploaded to smoothy. I'm thinking this patch is maybe corrupt, or I am not extracting it properly proir to upload. And there is a new extraction process now ?

Has anybody here uploaded the 7th patch recently and if so did you have any issues with the extraction and upload when you did .

Any replies / solutions would be greatly appreciated :-)

Cheers for now,
Smoothwall fan,
Australia
