I am having a terrible time getting rid of elitum elitebar and the associated popups. I have run ad-aware and spybot. It just keeps re-appearing and remaking registry values and keys. (for malware called Bookedspace, VX2 and Ebates Moneymaker) I also had a problem with Huntbar which now doesn't show up on the spybot and ad-aware programs. My fix attempts were made with internet disconnected. The computer is trying to connect to the internet every few minutes and my computer will not shut down or restart normally, either. Here is my hijack log:

Hello Dxrad and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

I can see 5 malware programmes and an unknown Trojan in your log that need some attention. Let’s see how much we can fix in the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CWShredder
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Hoster

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll
O2 - BHO: CControl Object - {3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6} - C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitevbe32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr52] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll,DllRun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [s7FS33W] paqpmsg.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [rasrio] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rasrio.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dww2RTang] opedxm.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [sf] C:\Program Files\sf\sf.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [sfita] C:\WINDOWS\sfita.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [rasrio] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rasrio.exe
O16 - DPF: {130F89DC-B772-4E02-AEFA-1BDDD8BD4E96} (MitraInstallAX Control) - https://image.ghsech...GComponents.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

EliteBar

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\sf\

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\windows\system32\elitevbe32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\paqpmsg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rasrio.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\opedxm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ras_32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sfita.exe
ALCMTR.EXEplease use the search facility to locate these files
ShowWnd.exe
paqpmsg.exe

With those now deleted, please copy the text in bold below to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as elitefix.reg (Set filetype to 'all files')

Doubleclick elitefix.reg and confirm you want to merge it with the Registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LQ]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ohbbackup]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elitum]

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and I will take another look.

Please ensure that you are posting 3 log files as requested in your reply.

Hello again Joe

Thanks for the Ewido log. Please note that the HJT log you posted is incomplete, please repost a fresh log. Also please refer to my previous post and include the uninstall log as requested.

If the incomplete HJT log posted is the one after the fix, you may wish to run through the first fix again as I can see a lot of bad stuff still there.

If there is anything in my instructions that you don't understand, please ask.

This is related to my hospital work and lets this home computer connect to the hospital's system.

My computer seems to be functioning normally. Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware now turn up nothing and re-running Ewido also showed no problems. Is there any significant problem remaining on my HijackThis log?

Hello Joe

The 016 entry was erring on the side of safety. I couldn't get much on it, and since it is only an Active X entry, if it is legitimate, it will download itself the next time you visit its parent site, so suggesting a fix for it was merely a safe decision. Anyway:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy surfing!
