Can't open PDF Files

Suddenly unable to open my PDF files either on the Internet or in my Documents Folder. Acrobat Reader 4.0 is installed.Reader opens up and then I receive error message "cannot open a temporary file".My operating platform is MacIntosh 8.6.

Any suggestions most appreciated!

You can get Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 for MAC 8.6-9.0
