monitor problem

Finally about to work on transfer from XP to Vista computer when Vista monitor is very bright. I turned it on and thought the monitor was just showing white. I restarted computer by pushing On/Off button. While it was restarting I noticed a vague image. The monitor was very bright. I played with Brightness, Contrast and such. I can not get the monitor anywhere near normal appearance. Any suggestions?
Compaq Pressario SR5601P with a Sony monitor. Used very little. Has not been on in at least 6 months.
Appreciate any suggestions.
