Dear Geeks,

I have run the latest versions of Ad-Aware, Spy Bot S&D and I still can't shake Aurora off my friend's computer.

I"m attaching the HJT log.

Thanks in advance!

Hello mbooher ;)

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [unakar] c:\windows\system32\xtllegq.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan. (please post the whole Hijack log in the thread)not as an attach. thanks :tazz:

Hi Loophole,

I really appreciate your ;) !! Geeks To Go are GREAT!!!

A couple items I need to let you know about:

1) While waiting to hear back from you all, a friend had me load Trojan Stopper and the Microsoft/GIANT Anti-Spyware program. Those two seemed to get rid of Aurora and Nail. HOWEVER...

2) After installing the Microsoft product, her computer seemed to be running very well...except the MS-AntiSW kept finding the same ones over and over each time I booted. It found "HuntBar" and "CoolWeb." The product would prevent them from loading again, but, like the moving "Groundhog Day," they kept coming back.

3) The gal who owns this computer had two profiles set up in XP Home. I had read somewhere that it's best to set up an "Admin" profile with full authority; then set up each of the users with limited authority. This gave her 3 profiles. That was supposed to keep most spyware and malware from loading, as the profile didn't have enough authority to install programs. That really didn't seem to help - It seems the malware varies depending on what profile was signing on - even the limited authority profiles seemed to want to load the malware (althought the Microsoft product told you about it and prevent it from loading).

(Would you please give me your humble opinion - keep the two profiles with limited authority and have a password protected Admin????) Thanks!

4) The nailfix.cmd you wanted me to do did not seem to do anything - I think the other products I ran took care of nail.exe.

5) I didn't see the items you were looking for in my original HJT log - again, I think the other products must have taken care of those:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [unakar] c:\windows\system32\xtllegq.exe

6) I've done all the tasks you suggested. WOW - The ewido suite is AWESOME!! :tazz: It found 289 infected files!!!! WHOA!!!

While running in SAFE mode, I could not see some of my desktop. I tried fiddling with the settings, but it didn't help.

Some bad news - there was no option to save a log that I could find where it listed the baddies. I tried to cut & paste to no avail. However, I kept the other logs:

Hello Mbooher :tazz:

1) While waiting to hear back from you all, a friend had me load Trojan Stopper and the Microsoft/GIANT Anti-Spyware program. Those two seemed to get rid of Aurora and Nail. HOWEVER...

These two products wont remove the full infection. The fix I gave you is the only way I have seen the full infection removed

This program is good as long as your computer is clean as it protects things from being altered. However if you install it on an infected machine it will protect those things also.we will disable this in a little bit.

My opinion is the less accounts the better . The way she has it set up really works no better than any other way. the bottom line is you need to have your computer protected and all your windows updates installed and use common sense when going to sites and not clicking on things if you dont know what they are.(this in no way implies to you just in general ;) )

4) The nailfix.cmd you wanted me to do did not seem to do anything - I think the other products I ran took care of nail.exe.

This is what takes care of the service that comes with the nail infection. It doesnt appear to do much but this is invaluable to removing this infection as this is the part nothing else takes care of

5) I didn't see the items you were looking for in my original HJT log - again, I think the other products must have taken care of those:

This is a good thing

Ok now to finish the cleanup
You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure
Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
(I didnt see where you mentioned this so if you did download this then skip this)

disconnect from the internet
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.(if present)

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic

Good evening loophole ;)

Thanks again for all your help - I think we're close!

I have deleted the "Admin" profile I set up for her, so there are now only here two original profiles.

Also, I ran the CWshredder, but it found no trace of CoolWeb

I've done your other steps, and my new HiJackThis log follows:

good job mbooher :tazz:

your system is clean

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
