Edit: Since it's been some time since I first posted this, I decided to clean my system again and create a new hijacker log. Main reason for this is popuper hasn't appeared lately, but I definitely still have a virus. I editted the original post (though I left it below) because I saw the forum rule about not "bumping" threads. Please help soon!

(original post begins here)
I've been having some recent trouble with popuper.exe and intmonp.exe. If I don't catch their first instance with the task manager while my computer is booting up, they end up opening multipple instances, until my computer's performance is so slow, I can't do anything.

That's the short version.

The long version goes something like this.

I'm not great about Windows Updates. My anti-virus software came up for renewal, but because I couldn't view the page to purchase the Norton 2005, I put off renewing it for a bit. A bit became 5 months. In that time, I managed to pick up popuper.

I noticed it when my performance began to slow on my machine. I opened up my task manager and saw at least a couple dozen instances of popuper and intmontp. I couldn't even open Adaware the computer was so slow. I tried rebooting. My computer got stuck. Taskmanager once again revealed the presence of popuper and intmontp. I rebooted again, only this time, checked taskmanager every couple seconds as it was. I managed to catch it on the first instance and shut it down. With no instances, I was able to run Adaware. I thought this would take care of the problem.

It didn't. On next reboot, I noticed I still had the two programs. Di my little catching trick and this time went online, got my windows updates (which enabled me to see the Norton 2005 purchase screen), purchased the latest version of Norton and updates, and tried running AdAware and Norton to get rid of the problem. While they did clean up quite a bit of my drive, the popuper remains. I also get system window with the title "System Warning" and the text "Network fatal error at 00FF:2348AD / Warning! Your internet connection is not secured. Please, use network security softward to protect your PC from remote attacks and hacks. Click "Ok" to get all the available "Network Security" software." Because these only appear when I'm online, I'm skeptical of them and have always closed the window and never clicked on "OK."

I went to Google and found this site. I noticed another thread (http://www.geekstogo...exe-t20227.html) where one of your techs recommended using a combination of HijackThis and KillBox.exe. I've gone through your preflight cleansing with CleanUp!, Adaware (with customized settings), CW Shredder, Spybot S&D, and Norton 2005. I was getting ready to follow the instruction you gave to the other Popuper victim, running HijackThis and KillBox in safemode, but figured I'd best check in to make sure this is what I needed.

Below is my HijackThis log. I ran it normally (though I still "caught" popuper while the system as described above). Are the steps described in the thread I linked to what I need to follow? Please help.

Thank you in advance,
Matt

Crazy Eskimo,

Hello, and welcome to the GeekstoGo Forums. My name is Jfcap, and I will be helping you clean your system. I would like to start off by apologizing in the delay in our response time. We try not to let posts slip through the cracks, but things do happen due the the ammount of posts on our website, so again I apologize.

Please update, configure, and re-run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D as below:
Make sure you're using the latest version of Ad-aware If you're using an older version, download Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below
  • Update
    • Select Check for updates.
    • Then Connect and download SE1R28 16.02.2005 .
  • Click Start
  • Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
  • Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.
Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have version 1.3 final.)
Home - The home of Spybot-S&D!: http://www.safer-networking.org/
Here is a nice Tutorial http://www.safer-net...p?page=tutorial

2. Go to Start > Programs >Spybot Search & Destroy and choose 'Spybot S&D'

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button 'Search for Updates' and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' (RED) entries BLACK entries and GREEN (GREEN) entries in the window

7. Make sure there is a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

8. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

9. REBOOT

Also, run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.
Command on Demand

Also run an online trojan scan here: http://www.trojanscan.com/
Reboot when finished.

Re-run HijackThis and post the new log.

No worries about the delay. I'm just glad for the help. :tazz:

I have your instructions, will run them, and post the new log file as soon as I can (probably in about two hours).

Okay, last night I managed to download the newest versions of Adaware 1.06 and Spybot 1.3 and run them. I also ran a Housecall scan, though dling and running it took longer than I expected, so afterward I had to shut down for the night.

Tonight (I'm at work right now), I'll run two more scans, the online trojan scan, and then HijackThis and hopefully post the log tonight. This is, of course, unless all the scans have to be run contiguously and the others have to be rerun, but considering that there are reboots at every step, I would think I'm fine so long as I don't do something else n between, right?

Thanks for your patience and your help.

One other thing, when I ran Housecall, it found 19 viruses that it was neither able to clean or delete. I tried going to the filepath specified and deleting them manually, but received a "File is in use" error. Should I just let the other programs have a crack at them?

Crazy Eskimo,

Take your time with the fixes, the scans should take a long time. Make sure you post the logs to all of the scans, if you didnt copy them, thats ok, just give me the logs from the rest of the scans.

The viruses that qere found may have been Trojans, and trojan hunter will pick them up.

If you get the error message, where you cannot delete the viruses again, tell me which viruses it is finding.

Good Luck.

Luckily, I did write down the viruses that Housecall found. I also was able to run Panda ActiveScan and RAV online scan (their logs are at the bottom). Tomorrow, I plan to run one more scan, the trojan scan, and finally hijack this and post those logs as well.

The following viruses were found by Housecall:

Troj_small.oi
Troj_puper.K
Troj_Adclicker.V
Troj_lstbar.gen
Troj_Agent.UV
Troj_Secthot.an
Troj_holax.a

They were attached to the following files:

Crazy Eskimo,

Did you run the trojan scan? if not please do so.

Run an online trojan scan here: http://www.trojanscan.com/

Reboot when finished.

Hello again. Sorry for the delay. The other scans tooks a while to run, so I wasn't able to finish them all at once. I posted the previous logs because I wanted to keep you appraised of my status. This evening I did manage to run eTrust (which found nothing), Trojan Scan (which found about 19 infected files, but had no log saving feature, and directed me to asquared to clean them up), asquared (which found the same files again and deleted them. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the log until after the cleanup had run), and finally HijackThis.

Here is the final HiJackThis log:

Okay, I ran the HijackThisScan, got rid of the files you specified, and then rebooted in safemode.

When there:
there was no filez.exe or eied_s7.cab
I did a search and found a file called "ieex.cab" but left it alone.
I also searched for "Power Reg". I found "PowerReg.dat" which I left alone and "backup-20050603-181304-396-PowerReg Scheduler.exe" which I deleted.

I rebooted again and ran HiJackThis again and got this log:

Hey Jfcap,

Sorry for the late response. I've been testing my system out to make sure it's not giving me any trouble. The following issues still exist.

1) A window for Microsoft Messages pops up everytime I start my computer. This didn't happen before my troubles, so either a) there's still a linger presence on my computer or (more likely) b) in the process of cleaning my computer, I (we) turned on a setting that I would rather have off.

2) I can no longer browse the Internet through AOL (I use AOL dialup to connect to the Internet). While I usually use IE anyway, the fact that AOL cannot pull up any sites whatsoever is somewhat bothering to me. It's a recent phenomenon (only started happening in the final days before you helped me) and it makes me wonder if something is still lingering on my system. I've attached a screenshot in case that helps make things clearer.

3) When I run Adaware, I tend to hit certain "suspect files". What I mean by this is that when Adaware reaches certain numbers, a window will popup, purporting to be Norton Antivirus and claiming it has cleaned/deleted a certain file. That would be great, except the next time I run Adaware, it finds another file when the same number of files scanned is reached, leading me to believe it didn't actually succeed in getting rid of the file. This is both annoying (the scan can't continue until I hit the return key, and this happens quite a few times near the end of the scan) and disturbing (I wonder if there's still a virus/viruses on my computer). This phenomenon, as opposed to the other two, has been happening for a while, though the number of times it happens in a scan has gone up in recent days (before you started helping me).

Aside from all these issues, I want to thank you for the wonderful job you've done helping me so far. My computer is 10,000% better than it was before you replied. I no longer have to deal with popuper or many of the other problems I had. I would love your help on these remaining issues, but already tremendously appreciate all that you've done for me so far.

Thank you.

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.
