Hello,

A window for Microsoft Messages pops up everytime I start my computer. This didn't happen before my troubles, so either a) there's still a linger presence on my computer or (more likely) b) in the process of cleaning my computer, I (we) turned on a setting that I would rather have off.

What does this message say?

Try this scan as well:

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

The webpage you linked to said the software was designed for Windows 2000 and XP. I use Windows ME. Will this be a problem?

Crazy,

You should be able to use Ewido. Try it, and let me know if you cannot run it. I hope that you can because it will be a good tool. But dont worry if it wont let you use it, we can fix the problem still.

Okay. Just wanted to ask to be sure.

On the Msmsgs, there's a bit of text, so I decided to just include a screenshot. It looks just like a normal screen that appears on startup, but I'd rather it didn't.

I'll be running ewido now. Will post log as soon as its done.

I wouldn't let me run the setup for ewido. An error message popped up saying that ewido needed Windows 2000 and up to run.

Crazy Eskimo,

Your HiJackThis log looks clean to me, so lets run another scan to see if we can clean up some of the problems.

Please go here and download CCleaner.

CCleaner will do the following:

Internet Explorer
Temporary files, URL history, cookies, Autocomplete form history, index.dat.
Firefox
Temporary files, URL history, cookies, download history.
Windows
Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.
Registry cleaner
Advanced cleaner to remove unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more... also comes with a comprehensive backup feature.
Third-party applications
Removes temp files and recent file lists (MRUs) from many apps including Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, MS Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and many more...
100% Spyware FREE
This software does NOT contain any Spyware, Adware or Viruses.

Install the program, and then right click on your recycle bin and select Open CCleaner

Once opened select Run Cleaner

Reboot after the program is done and post a new HiJackThis log. Also let me know is anything changes.

I installed it and ran it. Here's the hijack this log. I still can't see webpages through AOLs browser and I get the MSMsgs startup window. I haven't had a chance to do an AdAware scan yet.

Well, if you dont use MSN, look in Add/Remove programs and uninstall any MSN that you see.

Try that, and see if that gets rid of the install message. Ill ask around about the AOL issue.

I uninstalled Microsoft Messages (since I don't use it) and that window has gone away... the answer was so simple, I'm embarassed to have bothered you with it.

I ran Adaware again and encountered the same problem as before. I've enclosed a screenshot, so you can get a sense of the error message. At very specific places in the scan, this type of window will pop up, saying it's fixed an error (generally twice right before reaching 160000 files searched, once around 180000, and several times betwen 260000 and 300000). This is fine, except the next time I run a scan, the message will pop up in the same place, leading me to believe it hasn't actually been cleaned.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Matt

Matt,

Lets run the Windows File Protection Service, to make sure everything is OK with windows. I am doing this because I am lost abotu the AdAware issue, and WFPS works wonders, because it replaces anything that could be corrupt.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan. If this still asks you to put in your windows XP CD, and you do not have the CD (If you bought it preinstalled) post back for more tips, otherwise enter Windows CD.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
