1) Desktop PC running Windows XP
2) Cable modem for internet access (Scientific Atlanta)
3) Linksys wireless-G broadband router
I had been using this home network setup for more than a year without any problems.
(Our daughter lives out of town, and we bought the router so that she could have wireless internet access on her laptop when she’s home visiting.) Recently, however, it appeared as though my onboard NIC was no longer working, so I installed an NIC in one of the expansion slots in my PC. First, I received a message about “limited or no connectivity.” Then, I believe I was presented with an option via a dialog box to correct the problem --??something to do with changing the IP address maybe (kicking myself now for not writing this down at the time!)??? I accepted. Now, the message it gives is, “IP address conflict with another system on this network.”
Is each NIC associated with its own IP address? And is the conflict occurring because I have two NICs on the same computer? Do I have to “disable” the onboard NIC that I am not using within System Properties? Also, will I have to re-install the software for the router (hoping this won’t be necessary)?
I’ve been searching for background material that would help me to understand the problem, but it what I’ve found doesn’t seem to answer my specific questions.
