I'm having an issue connecting to the internet from my laptop since upgrading to SP3. I get no HTTP, HTTPS or FTP connectino could be done. All my other laptops can connect to the wireless execpt mine.

My problems all started with removal of Malware. I worked with at tech in the Malware forumn to remove the malware and upgraded to SP3.

Once all this was done, I could no longer connect to the internet.

I was suggested that I post in this forum for more assistance.

Do you connect via ethernet ie hard wired or wireless.
Open control panel, what is showing please in network connections.
If wireless - built in or usb adaptor.
Go device manager what is showing there please.

I connect wireless and it's built in my laptop.

Network connections shows:

Wireless network connection...connected

Local area network...disabled

1294 Connection...disabled

Network adapter...disabled


Device manager shows the same:
1394 red X
network connection red x
wireless connect green

just some additional info..I can connect just fine if I boot up in Safe mode.

Safe Mode with networking, loads only a minimal set of drivers.
For wireless you may use either the wireless card connection ie: Broadcom or you may use Windows Wireless Zero Configuration.
If you use both you may well experience this.
Alternatively it could be another service running that is NOT running in Safe Mode.
Have a look at Control Panel, Administrative functions, Services and scroll down to Windows Wireless.Double click that entry
See if that is disabled or enabled.
If it is disabled, set it to automatic, using the arrow at the side, of the word disabled and click automatic.
Then click Apply and OK
See if that works.

I don't find a windows wireless, but I did find Wireless Zero Configuration and it is set to automatic.

Yes from my post that is what I said, but then I just shortened it to Windows Wireless, in the next paragraph. I am sorry I confused you.

As it runs in Safe Mode it is, I think we can presume something running in normal mode that is stopping it.
I have just read the whole of the post in Malware and the numerous steps that SweetTech guided you through,
in relation to the connection problem.
PLease connect with an ethernet cable if that is possible, so that we can run some checks on this computer using a facility from Microsoft.

I tried both of your suggestion and no luck. I then thought I'd just back off SP3,but when I tried it told me there was a missing file and didn't say which one was missing. It's looks like I'm stuck in nowheresville and may have to completely reload my computer.

Can you connect hard wired. If so run this and then download and install whatever this program reports necessarfy by way of updates.

Totally frustrated by not being able to connect and not sure all the changes I've made over the last 2 weeks from suggestions from Geekstogo, decided to just cut to the chase an refresh my machine from the recovery disc. I'm now back at out of the box settings and I cannot connect to the internet with blazing speed. I will never ever upgrade to Wins XP SP3. Microsoft cannot deliver software from release to release that is compatible to all setups. This was the 2nd time I got caught in the MS net and I have learned my lesson.

Not a good idea to stay without SP3.
Support for XP without SP3 has finished on 10th July this year and you will NOT receive Security Updates.
SP3, unless you had a virus on the computer was NOT the cause of the problem.
