Laptop to TV

I have a HP Pavillion dv6910us. I am trying to attach it to my Insignia TV. I have a VGA to DVI adapter, and then a DVI to HDMI cable. It looks like a mess but I am hoping it gets the job done. I have it all plugged in, and my laptop recognizes the TV. Under display settings, a second laptop of proper size and resolution appears, and I hit enable. Everything goes as it should on the laptop, but the TV only displays "no signal". Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this?
