Vista lockup

Hi, My next door neighbour's HP550 Laptop with a celeron CPU and "Vista Basic" OS and 1Gb memory, boots up without any problems, but within minutes it seems to have locked up, (the mouse will still move, but that's all).It doesn't matter what you are doing it just stops. I cannot find an "F11" as sugested in other threads and hitting the esc button allows a bootup repair, but the bootup is not the problem. Can anyone help please
