Sound Issue

My sound wont work, I went to the control panel to see if it was muted. On the top of the first screen it said that there was no audio device and had all the options lightened. I never encounter a problem like this before and I was hoping some one could tell me what was wrong and the steps necessary to fix it.

Have you tried using System Restore to return your computer to a previous state?
