Here are the symptoms:

Recently I have been getting the multiple mails from the german Mailer-Daemon, which I know of to be the Sober virus strain. However, when I ran the test off the symantec website, I apparently did not have it. Those have recently stopped (past two days) but now, every five minutes or so, I will see in my taskbar a window pop up, and then disappear. Notice that it does not appear on the desktop or anywhere visible, just the small tab on the taskbar. It has no name, and the picture is the typical window. It's only there for a second or two, and then its gone.

I have a screenshot (yes, it was hard to get...lol) if necessary.

I've run every antivirus, spyware removal, and trojan removal program I can think of. I often take care of the computer, so it is surprising I can't remove this problem...

Any help?

hello Flipperbw :tazz:

Lets get you fixed up

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.(If present)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

(I would advise you to ditch one of your anti-virus programs( AVG7,Trend Micro) as they tend to conflict.)

hello Flipperbw :tazz:

Log looks clean. How is the system running? Are you still getting those popups?

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O23 - Service: Trend Micro Central Control Component (PcCtlCom) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PcCtlCom.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Trend Micro Real-time Service (Tmntsrv) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\Tmntsrv.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Trend Micro Personal Firewall (TmPfw) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\TmPfw.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Trend Micro Proxy Service (tmproxy) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\tmproxy.exe (file missing)

Reboot and post a new log

The system is running fine, but I'm still getting those damned popups! :tazz: They seem to come much less frequently now...but I'm still a bit worried.

I put the x's next to the Trend Micro results on HJT, and hit fix, but they just came back on reboot. The scan this time was exactly the same as the scan last time.

Is it possible that the popups have something to do with hardware? I've just recently installed a new HP printer, and the popups seem to have started soon after that (or maybe before...I'm not 100% sure).

Thanks again for your timely and quick responses.

Hello Flipper ;)

This popup is starting to annoy me now :tazz: I need to be sure there is nothing hiding on us (I have a feeling there isnt)
Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan Please report back any thing it finds . I will do some more checking, also
Go ahead and attach the screenshot of the popup.
One final question do you still use a Lexmark printer?
We will handle the Trend Micro issue also.

Thanks

Alright, I did the scan, and it found one virus (in System32/ActiveScan/_____dll) or something to that effect...

So I deleted it, rebooted, and the dreaded thing came up again.

I've attached the screenshot.

And nope, I no longer use the Lexmark...I just replaced it with the HP.

Thanks again....hopefully we can fix this thing!

Edit: Just so you know, I'm no longer getting those annoying emails (the sober virus), which is a good thing.

Hello Flipperbw

Im starting to think this is not a malware problem. all of the below are not required.
research these and Rescan with Hijack and check the corresponding boxes then click fix checked

Seems clean to me...except for the Trend Micro missing files.

Two questions. One, it is ok to be running both AVG antivirus and Spysweeper at the same time? Will they conflict?

And also, I noticed that when I restart, I get a message about windows trying to end something called WindowsFormsParkingWindow. What is this? I think it has to do with the popups, since this message began around the same time the popups did.

Thanks again...

Hello Flipper Bw

Ok as far as the WindowsFormsParkingWindow problem there seems to be a correlation between this message and the Hp Image Zone fast start http://www.bleepingc....exe-10037.html
Im not sure if the installation disk with your printer put this on your computer but by the sound of things it could be likely.Try checking this line with Hijack

O4 - Global Startup: HP Image Zone Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe

click fix checked and reboot and see if that stops it

Now boot to safe mode and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Trendmicro

As far as the anti-Virus and Spysweeper conflicting no they wont and infact its a good idea to have atleast 2 spyware scanners I will recommend some a little later.

as far as your log it is clean :tazz:

Please advise on the situation thanks

Alright well I'm not getting the WindowsForms thing anymore, so thats good!

But...well...I don't have a Trendmicro folder anywhere on my computer... :tazz:

...and im still getting the popups. Could it have something to do with the new printer?

Hello Flipperbw ;)

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Trend Micro Personal Firewall (TmPfw)
Trend Micro Central Control Component (PcCtlCom)
Trend Micro Real-time Service (Tmntsrv)
Trend Micro Proxy Service (tmproxy)

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Im running out of Ideas :tazz: on the popup if you can right click on it and tell me the properties (I doubt you can) that would help. Try uninstalling the printer and see if it stops.Lets try one final look for malware try this scan Kaspersky OnLine Scan Please note anything it finds
