xp operating system

my computer worked fine last night- turn it on this morning and xp will not boot- it gets to the windows screen and sticks- the little green dots just keeps on and on. Have tried to use application recovery disc and xp operating disc- no luck - have also tried safe mode- will not go there- what can I do?
