AUX headphone jack not working; only coming out main speakers on lapto

Hey. I have red/white RCA cable from HP mini headphone jack to receiver unit. but the music wont come out speakers on stereo only still out of the main mini speakers. had a problem few weeks back were it took a few minutes to cick over to aux from main. but now its not going at all. dont worry i have all the right buttons pressed and cables in on reciever and such.. i can hear the static coming out of speakers when i move the cable in and out of the jack port on laptop so i know something atleast is getting through but the main sound is still only coming through the main little speakers on laptop.. any ideas? restart laptop with cable pluged in???
