My son's laptop has developed a major problem.

He upgraded a few months ago to Windows 7.

On startup the laptop screen lights up for a few seconds then goes virtually blank. If you start in safe mode the screen is OK for a few minutes and then goes blank.
If you attach an external monitor it will display and intermittently will display both on the laptop and on the external monitor by selecting Fn + F4.

In addition it runs very slowly and is prone to crashing usually within 15-30 minutes of operation.

I suspect that the system is struggling to run Windows 7.

However, I have carried out the basic malware checks and attach the GMER log and OTL logs.

The Malwarebytes scan found no problems nor did the Microsoft Security Esssentials scan. Hope you can help

This sounds like a hardware problem, not a software problem.
If the machine is fine on an external monitor it's more likely either an inverter problem or a problem with the screen in the laptop.

This can be caused by several issues which we will try to decipher.

I suspect that the system is struggling to run Windows 7.

This could be the issue especially if you didn't run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before doing the upgrade to check for any compatibility issues you may have.

However, I have carried out the basic malware checks and attach the GMER log and OTL logs.

apparently this is not the issue as I had a Malware moderator look at the logs and they removed them which tells me it is not malware related.

Now lets get some info and we will get started. Please provide the info from my first response above and then do the following.


Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.





Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

You are running the bare minimum and thats not really going to work. It may have worked in the beginning but Win7 really needs at least 1 gig if not 2 gigs to work fine.
Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Did you by chance run the Win 7 advisor before updating it to make sure you would have no issues?
