Hello,
I don't have the slightest notion what I'm doing, but I'm trying to help bring this computer back into line. In the past two days, I've installed a firewall,
Ad Aware SE, run AVG several times and other virus scans, too. I get a message to run AVG because of trojan horses (I think there's a herd of them, in there!) :P So then, I run AVG again, but the trojan horse messages continue. <_< I have read your comments and followed all of the suggestions. Nothing seems to touch those trojan horses. :o Could you help? (I posted this request as a reply to another issue before I realized this was the right spot to post... :D )

Here's the log:

I don't see any signs of an active infection. Are the trojan warnings you get about a system restore file? Can you post the exact AVG message?

I downloaded and ran a free trial version of Kapersky Labs anti-virus program. It took a long time to run, but it pulled out several Trojan Horses. After it ran though, the system was nearly inoperable. I uninstalled this and another recently added virus scan, and it seems to be working fine, now.

Those identified by AVG pop-ups were--

Trojan Horse Dialer C:\System Volume Information\_restore....A0034839
Trojan Horse Downloader Alchemie A (This was removed by Kapersky)
C:\DOCUMENT\Mary\LOCALS~1\Temp....alchem.exe
Trojan Horse Downloader.Agent.AS
C:\System Volume Information\_restore....A0059770.exe
Trojan Horse Startpage.5.BN
C:\System Volume Information\_restore...A0034839.exe
Trojan Horse Downloader.VB.EC
C:\System Volume Information\_restore...
Trojan Horse Dialer C:\System Volume Information\_restore...

So, it looks like several of AVG's targets were in system restore files. Does this mean they aren't harmful?
Kapersky Lab's anti-virus identified several other Trojan Horses that it removed. <_< Unfortunately, I didn't keep that log, and, as I said, I had to uninstall the program.

AVG will run tonight and I'll let you know if I receive alerts again.

Thank you for your help!

(BTW: can you identify some safe emoticons I could download for email?) :D

Not harmful, but should still be cleared.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP

BTW: can you identify some safe emoticons I could download for email?

I really don't know of any, perhaps somebody else will recommend something.

P.S. Never install more than one anti-virus program on your computer at the same time. It will provide less protection, not more.

I followed your instructions to turn off, then turn on the system restore, and I removed the excess anti-virus programs. My system seems to run smoothly now. Thank you for your help!
