Hi,

I could really use some help. I've got an HP Compaq 6720s that came with Vista Home Basic pre-installed. Had it for about 18 months without a problem. I use Sophos Endpoint Security and SuperAntiSpyware to protect my computer.

When I loaded up this morning I was told and unauthorised change was made to Windows and I need to input a valid license key. I've tried putting in the code that is on the Windows sticker on the bottom of my computer, but no joy.

I could really do with some help!

Thanks.

Malware can cause this problem as a system file could have been overwritten/modified. Go through the threads here to check out your system.

Hi.

The problem is that neither Sophos or SuperAntiSpyware are detecting any malware items. I could really do with someone talking me through. I know it's a big ask but I'd be massively grateful!

You will need to contact Microsoft and re-activate it. Any recent changes at all? Significant hardware changes will cause a machine to have to reactivate.

No recent changes. One day it was fine. The next day it was problems galore!

Taken from a post off MS Social:

This means the file has been Tampered, Modified or has become Corrupt. Vista see this as an attack to bypass it's Licensing security.

To resolve the issue, you need to either repair file .

First try repairing Windows using System Restore:

1) Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

2) Click the 'Start' button

3) In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit "Enter" keyboard key

4) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

5) Click the "Next" button.

6) Reboot back into Normal mode

7) Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

If that doesn't work, we'll try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad Vista files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

1) Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)

2) Launch an Internet Browser

3) Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

4) Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

5) Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'

6) In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow

7) Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either to contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or reinstall Vista.

If you can't solve the issue with the advice provided then you could try re-installing Windows. I'm guessing as you have an HP Compaq, then you have probably got a recovery option installed on a partition drive on your computer. If you run this it will wipe your drive clean and restore it back to factory settings. Of course you will have to go through all the installing of your software that did not come shipped with the computer, and update everything, but as a last resort you should have this option.
