[Jeudew]

Well I have been working on this one for many hours now and can't seem to get my desktop back. I can't open explorer.exe, control.exe, ieplorer.exe, or use the windows search function.

So far i have tried; CWShredder, SpSeHjfix_Beta9, Ewido, Trojan Hunter 4.2, Spybot, TDS3, Ad-aware, and two different desktop repair registry files from this site.

Hi Jeudew
You have control of your desktop back ?

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the services called:

NT login service

or

ntlogin32

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (make sure there are NO spaces before or after the name):

ntlogin32
Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Post a new HiJackThis log after it reboots and let me know if you received any error messages.

did you run the smitfraud.reg ?

Yes, I ran the Smitfraud.reg, it merged into the registry but on restart nothing changed.

Go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security" or similar. Select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK

How would I go about opening Control Panel?
I don't have a start menu because explorer.exe will not open, and control.exe win not open either.

When you try open either program an error message comes up saying;

Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe' . Make sure you typed the path correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then click Search.

Also it come up with this error trying to open internet explorer.

Peform a repair install

1 - Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter Key

2 - You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed

3 - The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time.

4 - Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens.

Ok I finally found my Windows CD, did a repair install, no luck
the only difference now is my GFX card is set for a very low resolution probably 256 colors. Any other ideas or should I just throw my computer away?
