Laptop will not boot at all

Neighbors laptop will not boot at all. Tried new power cord that did not solve problem. Lights blink hard drive spins for about 5 seconds then it shuts down again. Any other ideas on what could be problem or is it time to throw it away.

It could be overheating, it could be a ram problem, it could a HD problem, the only way to know is to test things.

First i would see if you can clean the processor fan
Check the ram using MEMTEST86 bootable version
Unplug your HD to see if it stays on or if it still turns off.

Also check if the power button does not stick making the labtop turn off like if you were holding it down.
