I am trying to get away from xp and want to try ubantu. will it work with 196ram . and are there drivers for lexamark printers and hp scanners.

It's likely that it would run but it will probably be as slow as XP on the same machine. I would recommend going with a Lite distro like Xubuntu or antiX Mepis. With lighter windows managers you will get a faster desktop experience.

Another option would be to use the fluxbox environment. Some distros come with it. Fluxbox is more for users that are advanced with Linux, but if you'd like to test it click here for more information.
