5 days ago Norton warned me that the computer had the backdoor.jupdate virus. I followed the instructions they gave me to remove it and thought nothing more of it.

Last night I got another warning, this time for the scvhos1at.exe virus. I tried to remove it in the same way as the backdoor.jupdate but nothing was found. After searching on google for a bit, I found (on here) that the two viruses are related so I suspect I didn't get rid of it properly the first time.

I think we must have had this virus (or some variation) for about two weeks now. It keeps disconnecting our broadband and makes me create a new connection everytime I want to redial. Needless to say it's been incredibly annoying but now that I actually know what it is I have some hope that I can fix it!

I followed some advice from a similar thread and cleared the files in the prefetch folder, cleaned out the temporary and TIF files and then used Ewido to scan the computer. The log afterwards was as follows:

Please disable SpywareGuard for the time it takes us to clean your log. It might hinder us by guarding your settings.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot into safe mode and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hzvvys.exe <= if present

Boot back to normal and see if you can find C:\WINDOWS\system32\smlrst.exe
If you do have it scanned here:

and let me know the results

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I deleted all those files you mentioned, including the C:\WINDOWS\system32\hzvvys.exe.

Had a look for C:\WINDOWS\system32\smlrst.exe and it doesn't appear to be there so no need to scan anything.

Am I now trojan free?! Anything else I need to do? Any way I can prevent this from happening again? I have Norton Antivirus and Spyware Doctor but obviously that wasn't much use!

Thanks very much for all your help.

That looks clean. :tazz:

In case you were wondering:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
is the prompt you get at boot because startups are disabled in msconfig.
Nothing more, nothing less.

Excellent, thank you!

Thanks, I'll now get to re-enabling everything that should be enabled!

I really appreciate the help, things were looking rather hopeless this morning.

Want me to check the log when you are done with re-enabling and before you reboot?
