Hi. I'm not sure how this works. I was referred here by someone on a non-tech forum. Anyway, I'm sure my problem is a familar one. My laptop running WinME has been hijacked. Nothing paticularly nasty as far as I can tell, just keeps stealing my homepage, redirecting my browser (IE) to Jenna Jameson or FREE!!! viagra and puts an "air ticket" icon on my desktop. AdAware finds it but can't delete it. Well, here is my log - I will be very happy if anyone can tell me what I can do to fix this:

Please do a find files for param32.dll , systr.dll or popup_bl.dll and guninst.exe
Most likely they will be in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\ folder

Let me know which ones are found where.

Both param32.dll and popup_bl.dll were found in the SYSTEM32 folder.

Good job.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run HijackThis and put checkmarks in front of he following items.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Then reboot back to normal and remove that icon from your desktop by rightclicking it, hold down SHIFT and choose Delete.

Post a new HijackThis log when you are done.

Thank you very much for your help. I'm still finding it difficult to believe this probmlem which has been so frustrating for the last week or so has been fixed so painlessly.

I'll report back here if there is any recurrence in the next few days (although I would have been hijacked at least once already in this short time and I am so far "amazing offer"-free). In the meantime I'll check out your page and I thank you in advance for the advice there also.
