I have just completed a round of malware removal. The related Forum topic can be found here.

The problem I am having is that, after using Internet Explorer 8, my mouse will no longer work on my desktop. I cannot start a program or open a file that is on my desktop. Nor does right clicking on the desktop bring up the "Arrange.....Properties" dialogue box. The mouse still works within a program. It still works with the taskbar, system tray, and Start button. The problem is limited to the desktop. Once the problem is present, I have to restart the computer to get the mouse working correctly. I do not get this problem when I use Firefox, Chrome, or Safari as a browser.

Lastly, I am not sure where my original OS disk is. It originally came with a computer I bought 8 years ago. About 2 years ago, that computer began failing so I had my hard drive re-imaged onto a new computer. I will look for the original OS disk, just in case.

There were no warnings or errors listed under the mouse in Device Manager. I recreated the error and checked again. There were still no warnings.

Added in Edit: I should probably note that I have had other problems with the computer today. I have had it completely lock up twice this morning. The first time, it was actually not being used, but was in screensaver mode. I had to do a hard reboot and the first time I got a blue screen error while Windows was loading. The second time the computer locked up I was just using Firefox.

Boot in Safe Mode - that is SAFE MODE, not Safe Mode with networking.
Normally accessed by tapping F8 as soon as the first post screen has appeared and It starts to load Windows.
When in Safe Mode.
Go Start
Run and Type "cmd" without the "
When the command window opens
type "cd\" without the " and you should then be at a C prompt
then type in "fsutil dirty query c:"
again without the "
THIS presumes that C is the letter of ther main hard drive carrying Windows.

If as I suspect that the answer is that the volunme is dirty you are going to have to run chkdsk.
Now go to My Computer and right click the HDD carrying Windows, click Properties, click Tools, click Error checking, click Check Now, click to check the box "automatically fix file system errors" and the box "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" Then click Start. You will be asked to reschedule on restart.
DO SO and let it run. IT is a five stage process. DO NOT INTERRUPT IT, it masy well take over an hour.
When it has finished see if the computer will then run without problems.
THAT will NOT be the end of the matter there is undoubtedly more work to do.

There are no colons in the above command.

then type in "fsutil dirty query c:"
again without colons

If you leave the colon out of that command, it will fail.

The result came back "Volume - c: is NOT Dirty"

I am going to run chkdsk anyways, as I have gotten my third BSOD of the morning just prior to rebooting in safe mode.

Am I correct in thinking that this is a usb mouse.
If so, do you have the ps2 conversion, if you do try connecting it in ps2.
Pls post details of mouse.

Chkdsk ran through to completion. I don't know if there is a log file anywhere that will tell whether or not any problems were fixed. I did run Internet Explorer and the problem did occur again.

I do have a USB mouse. It is a Dynex 5 button optical wired mouse. I do have the PS2 converter, however, believe it or not, the PS2 mouse port stopped working about a year ago. I just confirmed that it doesn't work. I moved the mouse from the USB to the PS2 port and it didn't work. I then rebooted the computer so that it came up with the mouse already hooked into the PS2 pot and it still didn't work.

Is the keyboard PS2 or USB.
Check the BIOS setup, see if PS2 is configurable

On systems that support a PS/2 style mouse, this setting enables or disables this port. If you are using the port you should enable this, otherwise you should disable it so that the interrupt reserved for the PS/2 mouse (IRQ12) can be used for another purpose. Some systems have an "Auto" setting for this parameter, which is really ideal, since it will only enable PS/2 support if you actually have one connected.

I appreciate that this is NOT the answer to the problem.
What we are trying to do is to eliminate the USB problem in IE.

Try running IE8 without add-0ns

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer

(No Add-ons)

USB, although there is also a PS2 port.

Check the BIOS setup, see if PS2 is configurable

Sorry, you will need to walk me through this procedure.

Try running IE8 without add-0ns

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer

(No Add-ons)

Interesting. The problem did not re-appear. I clicked on the pop-up bar to see what add-ons are loaded and there are quite a few. I noticed that there are several add-ons from AVG and should mention that this problem did crop up at around the same time I upgraded to AVG 9.0.

I need to step away now. So we will probably need to pick this up again later.

FWIW, here is the list of add-ons.
