Thanks for the update, I am sorry I could not help you resolve the issue without a Vista disk.

k well since im going to have to probably buy the operating system, does it matter if i use a 32-bit versus 64-bit installation disc if i'm going to be using the serial number of the computer and not the cd case, anyway?

As you do not mind formatting the HDD you could do as Dark Player suggested in post #6 and upgrade to W7 64bit.
