I am out of time and out of microsoft codes. I am a student and all of my documents are written and saved for microsoft purposes. Since open office is free, I am considering it. But it seems, all I can see for outlook are bad posts and complaints. So I'm a little worried about taking that rout. will I be able to open microsoft docs with open office?? If so, how? Is there another document program that is also free but better? Does anyone know a site where I can get microsoft back foor free? I am grasping at all possibilities at this point. Thanks a bunch everyone.

WRITER can of course read all your old Microsoft Word documents, or save your work in Microsoft Word format for sending to people who are still locked into Microsoft products. From version 3.0 WRITER can also open .docx files created with Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X.

Okay.I tried opening a document I saved with Microsoft when I had it. I tried opening it with openoffice and it wouldn't let me.It said something like "corrupted file. Error> blah blah blah. Do I need to change my file name in order to open it?

If so, your .DOC file may be corrupt.

You'll have to dumb it down for me there. Lol. Do you mean when i have microsoft, did it open okay? Or do you mean is the file saved as .doc in my documents? can I change that or do I not have to?

Wait! Never mind. I fixed it. I changed it from .rtf to .docx and now it opens just fine. Thanks, Buddy.
