I think this is a problem with some kind of malware and the scvhost. Look in the event viewer to see where the problem comes from.

I have had 2 computers in for repairs with this problem. On one computer i tried reinstalling IE 8 but the problem persisted. Then i asked the customer if they minded using a different browser and although skeptical they tried Firefox and had no problems switching.I transferred all their bookmarks to firefox. This was as far as that repair went.

Another customer just wanted the problem fixed so i ended up doing a clean install of the operating system after backing up as much data as i could.I just could not stop the error from coming back.

When you launch IE8 does it immediately go to a site different to your home page.
If so, you have an infection.
Go to the Malware Forum and work your way through the advice there.
