How is the system running now?
Is the slowness when booting or after windows is loaded?
Is there a particular program it runs slow or when anything is opened is it taking time to load?
Have you timed your startup to get a exact time limit on it?
Something else I thought of which might give us some help is Pc PitStop

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. At WTT we prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Best Regards

Well,

That was interesting! I've checked on my old computer, my daughter's computer and my work computers but after the test I found I never increase the memory of my main home computer!

http://www.pcpitstop...?conid=24005764

Say I have 894 MB RAM
could increase another 894 MB

Said I needed to update Realtek, wouldn't let me do it from PC Pitstop cause it says I'm not registered.
Tried to find a download spot at got to Pareto Driver Cure - which was a long trip to find you had to pay for what first seemed to be free. I guess I need to remove Pareto from my system now!

Pareto says I have outdated drivers;
NVIDIA GeForce 6150E nForce 430
NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
Realtek High Definition Audio 6.0.1.6235
NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management

Outdated software'
Auslogics Disk Defrag

I guess I should stop trying at this point. Seems maybe I 'just' need more memory. Although I'm a bit confused as I've never heard of a 894mb memory card/chip! lol

New question then - how do I find out how much memory this computer can take? Why would the scan indicate I have about 1.79 GB total memory and memory.com says I should have 4 GB total?

I appreciate your time.

This is not correct. Do you have onboard video?
If so I would say it is 128 megs which would increase your total memory to 1022 which would be right for 1 gig of total memory.

Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.
Post a link to the results page and I can take a look and give you a more exact answer to what you have and what you can increase to. :D

Hello,

I have one of the DSL conections thru Bellsouth/AT&T. When I run their Support Tool it reports I'm receiving/sending within what it should be. I believe the wires and connections in the phone box to my house get 'corroded' and slow speeds down. I just turned off modem and computer, went outside to take loose the wires and give a light sanding to them before reconnecting the wires. At next start and connection online it seemed to be a lot faster. I only wish I could stop the corrosion outside!

I have;
Vista Home Basic Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon 62 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30 GHz
Memory 1GB
currently 32 bit Operating System

I visited Crucial. http://www.crucial.c...482766731D926C3
Or - -
Says I need;
2GB 240-pin DIMM
Module Size: 2GB
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-8500

** SCAN BY Crucial.com
Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 1
Total Memory Slots: 2
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ Model 11, Stepping 2
CPU Speed: 2300 MHz

DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300 speeds.
Says can handle max of 4096MB.
Computer does NOT support EEC.
* * * * *
currently 1GB 800MHz - I don't remember where I got this info.
So - it appears I can get 4GB - 2 matched 2GM cards. That will have to happen at a later date though as I just don't have the money for it right now. Recently divorced, child support and Christmas is coming up!

Suggestions will be written and stored on computer till I can use it.

Much thanks for time and help.

This is the important info you need to replace the memory. 2GB 240-pin DIMM

Module Size: 2GB
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-8500

The below is the most important to make sure you get matching pairs of this.
DDR2 PC2-8500
This is what I found that should work for your system at NewEgg
