novice needing help to install new memory. hope i have bought the right stuff. have i 1gb 2x512 bought 1 pc3200 400mhz 184pin pny and hope to install in home pc i am using hp netbook here. so all help greatly welcome thanks

I can gice you a tutorial that has pics to show you where memory goes on a motherboard which should do the trick for you.

Picture 3 shows the ram slots on the mother board. Two yellow and two orange. Yours may not look like that and may only be two slots and both are black.
Half way down the page you will see the installation and instructions for installing the ram into the motherboard.
