If I insert any USB Thumb drive (tried 3 different drives from 3 manufacturuers) I get a 7F blue screen:

Mini101510-01.dmp 10/15/2010 9:47:55 AM UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP 0x1000007f 0x00000008 0x80042000 0x00000000 0x00000000 ntkrnlpa.exe ntkrnlpa.exe+60343 32-bit C:\Users\Brady\Desktop\Mini101510-01.dmp 1 15 2600

XP Home, I've updated BIOS to A9 (latest), and Dell Inspiron 6000.
I've done a repair installation of Windows XP Home. I've also uninstalled all USB drivers from Device Manager and let them re-detect and re-install. Updated BIOS, Chipset, Network, and Video drivers from the Dell website.

I can connect a Western Digital external harddrive (not thumb, full size external drive) and it works great. Do you have any recommendations for what else I can try? Blue screen happens after the drive is detected and the model is recognized, and then immemidately blue screens.

Hey bradyg23!

Are you plugging the USB drive into one of the front USB ports on your computer? If you are, try one of the ones on the back of the computer, as sometimes the front USB ports do not provide enough power to run the device, and that can cause problems.

If that does not work, I would recommend you temporarily disable any protection program that you have installed that may be scanning the drive and failing to check it in time.

Also please check that you have all Microsoft updates, not only the High Priority, but also any optional, particularly hardware updates.

Check that all your USB drivers are the latest available, I know you said you have uninstalled and let them then reinstall, but that is not always the best method.

See this please from the Dell site
