Black Screen | Blinking Cursor

When I start up my laptop (acer) running Windows Vista; I get a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left hand corner. Haven't been able to start in safe mode, but can start with F2 and get the following (in part):

CPU Type: Intel Celeron CPU 540
CPU Speed: 1.86GHz

System BIOS Version: V1.21
VGA BIOS Version: Intel V1518

Product Name: Aspire 5315
Manufacturer Name: Acer

What to do next?

At the very least, I'd like to be able to get the photos and documents I have on it.
