I now have AVG v 7.0 and updated it, but now it tells me it's not up to date. So...I'll keep looking, there has to be something out there. I normally use XP for the internet (will not upgrade to Vista, may get W7, but XP ain't broke, so ain't going to fix it, yet), but do use W98 occasionally, and want it to be safe.

Appreciate all your time and answers, not what I wanted to hear, but them's the breaks. Thank you.

Try Clamwin AV

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 7 / Vista / XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2008 and 2003.

A Review
I can't tell you how great it is but in my research in looking for something still supported for my seldom used windows ME, this is the only one I found.
