excel 2003 won't open across network

Hi
I have a small 4 computer network all running wp pro. I used to be able to open an Excel file across the network by clicking on a shortcut icon - but now can only open it if I open Excel first and put a pathway in. I thought I had found the fix here

Any suggestions please?
