I am desperately needing help!!! I keep getting the Aurora Pop ups and can't get rid of them. I followed the Beginning Instructions. I have on my PC Ad-aware, SpyBot, Microsoft Anit-Spyware, and AVG Free. I have run all of these in Safe Mode. What should I do??? Please help!!!

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. Do NOT run it yet.

Please download nailfix at http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip (for Windows XP) or http://users.pandora...y/nailfix2k.zip (for Windows 2000) Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd (or nailfix2k.bat if you have Windows 2000). Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next run a full scan in Ewido. Post the log from the Ewido scan here.

Thank you so much for your help. Question for you. Since I have AVG Free, should I unistall ewido so they don't conflict with each other? Also, will Microsoft anitspyware prevent spyware? Thanks again!!!

I forgot to mention, in the list of files to delete if found, I didn't find any, but I did find c:\WINTT\cfgmgr52.ini Since the extension was different I didn't delete it. Is that correct?

Yes, you may delete that ini file since it's associated with that other bad exe file.

I used to ask users to uninstall Ewido, but a user pointed it out that it's ok to leave it installed. Ewido says that their antivirus program will not conflict with most antivirus programs - AVG is one of these. So you may keep it if you wish, or uninstall it if you don't want it.

Yes, if you have Microsoft Antispyware's real-time protection enabled, then it will give you live protection. There are other programs that you should get to help prevent spyware (see below).

Get XP Service Pack 2 at your earliest convenience.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

I accidently had the system restore turned off the entire time until I read your message. Thinking I hadn't done this yet, I enabled it and reboot. I just want to make sure everything is still okay. Here is my log. Also, I read about xp service pack 2 and on the website it says to be sure to back everything up (documents, pictures, etc.). I was worried I might lose stuff. Do you think I will have a problem?

One other thing, sorry, I went to the windows update page, and the fonts are teeny tiny. Is this me or the webpage?

No problem, the log is ok.

Yes, we usually do ask users to turn off System Restore, but I changed my approach to this only because there are more nastier infections today that might cause Windows to malfunction if removed improperly. So now I just ask users to turn it off and then back on when everything is ok.

Try to get SP2 if you can. It shouldn't cause problems if your machine is running ok (with no problems). However, you may run into some hardware problems with SP2. I know I have. The manufacturer's site might have updates to this problem, but if not I guess you can stick with SP1a.

Regarding the small font size, is this just happening to the Windows update site? Try increasing the font, by going to Internet Explorer->View->Text Size and increase the font size there.
