I'm hoping I posted this in the correct section, but if not then please move as necessary.

My little brother was trying to install an application his Physics class provided for studywork and the following error message popped up.

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

Note:
-My laptop is currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate aka a 64-bit.

I'm not sure if the program is stating that I need a downgraded version of Windows to run the application, but it sort of seems logical since it ran fine on Win XP.

I tried to run the .exe by running it through Win7's Programs and Features's "Run programs made fo rprevious versions of Windows", but that didn't work out.

Is there any other alternative solutions? We do not have access to any computers that run on XP or Vista.

This says it all. The version you are trying to install sounds like the 32 bit version and you need the 64 bit version.
Contact whom ever gave you the program and let them know you have Win 7 64 bit and need the 64 bit version of the program to install.
