Hi, i have an old 2003 dell inspiron 1100 with windows xp and SP3, it was given to me about 6 months ago. it has worked fine until the windows update downloaded & after it said it needed to reboot, the dell logo appears, then the screen goes blank. i've tried the diagnosis and it says that its ok. i've also tried F8, F12 and each of the options within, but each time i press enter, it does the same thing as after the dell logo appears. from what i have read on the internet, at the library of course, some suggest that the lcd screen might be bad, but then why would i see the dell logo? any help would be great or is the laptop too old and i need to get a different one. i hope not bec it seemed to work good even tho its 7 years old.

It's not the screen. The last update has messed with a hardware driver causing the computer to NOT boot into XP. If you know what the update affected in the computer you could use a XP CD and get into recovery console, where you could delete the update and see if that will fix it( not likely). If not, then you should try a repair install on the computer.

Granted this is a pretty old laptop but you can still use it for many things like net surfing while on a vacation, etc. It works, so if you can fix it without costing money, why not? I still use a 1997 Toshiba Portage laptop with Win 98 to view pictures while on vacation out of the USA.If it gets stolen i really don't lose much and it works well for what i want to use it for.
