cd burner drive no longer recognized by win xp

Running a pent 3 with win xp. All of a sudden my e drive, which is my cd burner, has completely disappeared. It is no longer recognized by windows as being in my computer. I really need it to save pictures of the family. Any help in recovering it will be greatly appreciated.
