cd burner drive no longer recognized by win xp

Running a pent 3 with win xp. All of a sudden my e drive, which is my cd burner, has completely disappeared. It is no longer recognized by windows as being in my computer. I really need it to save pictures of the family. Any help in recovering it will be greatly appreciated.

have you install or uninstalled any burning programs lately? What preceded this issue?
