Hello,

I have been having some issues with my computer since Wednesday when a number of thumb drives were used as well as an internet connection in a hotel room. I keep getting a blue screen and firefox and/or internet explorer do not work. I brought it to best buy today and the geek squad told me it could be hardware or software. Unfortuntatly, the blue screen did not pop up there. They said I could leave it and run a diagnostic but this would take 3 days and I am hoping to avoid this. Is there any outlet ont he forum to get help with running a diagnostic and hopefully fixing the problem?

Thanks!

Hello jds2207.... Welcome to
GeeksToGo, :D
;) ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your issue. We will try to help you resolve this as soon
as possible.
  • Please understand we are all volunteers and we are not here all the time.
  • Sometimes it may be a extended amount of time to get back to you. If it has been
more then 3 days please shoot me a PM and I will try to get back to you quickly
    then.
  • Please do the following and supply the requested information as needed. If you
don't understand my instructions please ask and I will try to explain them
    clearer for you.
  • Do not attempt any steps unless instructed or ask before to
make sure they will not cause any further issues.

  • Desktop or Laptop
  • If name brand system then what make and model

First lets get some information and see if we can find the root of the issue.
  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
  • It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
  • Now go to Start and then to All Programs
  • Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
  • In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
  • Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
  • Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
  • Attach it to your next reply

Last step I would like you to take is:

Go to

Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

How To Run Chkdsk /r from Recovery Console:

How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). (Courtesy dsenette)
  • Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  • When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  • When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  • At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:

    chkdsk /r

  • Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
  • Report any errors

Thank you for the quick response. Unfortuntatly, my computer is acting up again so I am not able to run the diagnostics. Essentially, I get to my Windows log in screen and then it begins to load. Before it finishes, the bluee screen comes on. The code it is giving me is:
0X0000007E

I am not sure what to do here.

Thanks

OK lets see if we can stop that bugger so you can get the whole error message.
Please do the following:

  • Start your system and at the Second post screen tap on F8 to get to the Boot Menu
  • Use the Arrow Keys to Scroll down to the line that says "Auto Start On Error" and highlight it.
  • Click Enter to disable it
  • The system should reboot and if not then do so.
  • When the BSOD shows it will stop so that you can reply with the STOP ERROR and any parameters.

OK, when I went to reboot and do the previous posts steps to slow things down, it worked. I ran the diagnostics and am attaching the files. Also, I forgot to mention, I am using a laptop computer and it is a Lenovo T61.

I am now running the last step which is the chkdsk.

Thanks

One problem I see from your Everest report.

Disk free space is only 8% on drive C:

We need to free up some space so first of all lets start with two programs.

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

Also Speedfan did not show all the info so here is another program to see if we can get the information.

Motherboard Info:

Download SIW from HERE and get the Standalone English version
It will install itself and when finished

Then Click on SIW Icon to run program
On the left side click on the Sensors directory and then on the right, copy and paste the information in your next reply

Hi,

Unfortunately the blue screen is acting up again so I have not been able to run the memory programs. However, I followed your previous directions and disabled automatic restart on the error messages. Now I can tell you the codes.

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8AA361C4, 0xBA56FB04, 0xBA56F800)

Thanks for all of the help. I really appreciate it!

I have not been able to run the memory programs

:D

I don't see where I asked for any memory diagnostics to be run.
Post 7 instructions are for clearing up space on the hd.
Post 8 is to get a more precise voltage readings from your system.

Your error message points to this:

0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

We will deal with that in a bit. I really need the other instructions to be run first. ;)

Sorry for some of the confusion. I meant post 7 when I referenced memory. Here is where I stand:

(1) I keep getting blue screen errors so I am having difficulty completing post 7 and post 8. I have two new errors I have received:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBA4D3524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xBA570000, 0x00000001, 0x804F4BBE, 0x00000000)

I have been able to complete the disk defragging. I have started to run the TFC by OldTimer but it never seems to complete without a BSOD.

I have not been able to complete the motherboard information without a BSOD yet. I will keep trying though.

Thanks... you are probably getting very sick of my incompetence!!! I really appreciate your time.

Nope I enjoy doing this and I never get tired of answering questions for someone who is willing to learn during the steps we take. Now the other two errors mean as followed.

0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card)

And the other:

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

We will address those in a bit.
One suggestion have you tried to boot into Safe Mode to run the programs?
BTW you have run the programs out of order.
TFC should be first since it will delete temp files which could amount to a gig of space being freed up. Then run Auslogics Defrag to clean everything up and put it back in order. Doesn't hurt anything but you will need to run Auslogics again when TFC is done.

It looks like some progress is being made! I was able to run TFC through completion and then re-ran Auslogics. I also have the screen grabs from SIW. I am attaching the screen grabs as well as a new EVEREST report. If needed, I can free up some disk space by deleting some files. I keep a few large datasets on my laptop that are also stored on an external hard drive.

Thanks again.

Great backup plan.
let me ask do you have any videos, movies or music saved on your system? These can use a lot of room and can easily be saved to a external drive also for when you want to use them.

I have cleaned out a lot of the files. Attached is a new report. What should my next step be? The computer does seem to be a bit more stable.
