Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (or any malware program) not running

I've tried many times to get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to run but it always closes right when I click Scan. Same goes for my Norton Internet Security. I ended up having to uninstall NIS b/c if I didn't, I couldn't open my web browser and access the internet. The operating system is Windows XP. I've been at this for hours and have tried whatever I could think of or looked up (but didn't dare to get tou o specific since others' log files may differ from mines). If you could help I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.
