Hi,
I hope someone can help me.

I'm running XP home edition with service patch 3.

I stopped accepting Microsoft updates for a while but the other day I allowed 98 updates. Since then I can't shut my PC down as it freezes while going into stand by.

I can get round it by following this method but it's a real pain.

1, When PC freezes on standby screen I hold the power button for 5 sec until it powers off.
2, When I start PC it also freezes on Windows starting up screen. I then follow step 1 above.
3, Restart PC but bring up windows wasn't shut down correctly, I select start last know good session option and it works.

I'm sure it has something to do with one of the MS updates but I don't know which one.

Can anyone help me please

Open My Computer, right click the HDD carrying Windows, click Properties
Click the Tools tab
Click Error Checking
Click Check Now
Click to check the box - automatically fix file system errors
Click Start Agree to run on restart and do so.
DO NOT INTERRUPT the chkdsk, doing so may well corrupt the file system, or at worse render the HDD useless.
If you cannot read the results, or have left the computer unattended to complete the check, then go Control Panel, Administrative functions, Event Viewer, Application and scroll down to the Winlogon entry. Double click that entry and you will see the results.

Hi Macboatmaster,

Thanks for your response, I've followed your instructions which gave a result of "Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive."

But I still have the problem.... any other suggestions?

Go Start, run and type
"sfc /scannow" without quotes.
You may be asked to insert the XP CD if it finds system file corruption that cannot be fixed from the files on the HDD.
It will not report a result unless it cannot repair the files.

Re-install those updates.

If you have any usb devices plugged in, such as a camera, scanner or printer, disconnect them, if necessary of course use Safely Remove Hardware. Do not of course include keyboard or mouse if thoe are usb.
See if that will then allow it to go to standby and resume correctly.

If that does not work, disconnect any usb devices you have such as webcam, printer etc, but not including mouse and keyboard if they are usb.
Presuming it is not a laptop.
Use Safely Remove Hardware if appropriate.
See if it will now go standby and resume without a problem.

Hi Macboatmaster,

I tried to run "sfc /scannow" it asked be to insert xp disk but kept saying try again. might be because I'm running SP3 and the disk only has SP2.

Any way I ran clean boot as you advised and everything seem ok now.


Is there any long term issues leaving the system setup as it is now? Will this start up loose any functionality?

See this BUT my advice is DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING THAT YOU ARE UNSURE OF - especially the registry. It could easily end in disaster.

Pls follow my advice in post 6.

Then go Start and right click My Computer, click Properties, click Hardware, click Device Manager and see if you have any warnings against any devices. A common cause is an outdated or other driver error.

Was one of the updates IE8 check on Internet Explorer if that is your browser by clicking on the Help Tab and then clicking on About Internet
Explorer. It will tell you the version. Answer that in your next post please.

Regarding the Clean boot, it has NOT resolved the problem, the cause of it will still exist, it has simply stopped a service/process/startup item from running or loading automatically that was evidently the possible cause of the problem. The task now is to attempt to find what that was.

I feel reasonably certain that we will resolve the issue.

sorry I did follow your advise in post 6 but didn't report back.


post 6 results. One of the updates was ie8 which failed, but the log showed it updated ok the next day.

No driver errors or warnings showing in device manager ( I presume I would see a yellow triangle if there was a warning?)

I have looked at the link in post 11 but not attempted to follow this.

Try the command for system file checker again after following this instruction

If you don't have Windows CD...

click on Start... then Run
type in regedit and press enter

Navigate to the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

you want ... SourcePath

It has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now reboot your computer and try sfc /scannow again...

Will the computer SHUT DOWN normally and reboot normally eg: IS the problem only when trying to put the computer into standby mode.
