I have used CCleaner for a couple of years now as a means to clean up temp files, cookies, history, etc., and have been very happy with it. My question has to do with CCleaner's Registry scan and fix option. I have never used because I have been told before that use of a registry cleaner is a bad idea. However, there it is as an option on CCleaner. Just curious what opinions are out there as to whether or not this is a worthwhile application to run or should I continue to avoid it like the plague?

should I continue to avoid it like the plague

:D ;) ;) ;)
A registry cleaner will not increase your system's speed or performance, and has the potential to break your registry to the point that your PC is no longer bootable.
We strongly advise that people stay away from any of the registry cleaners out there.
Go HERE to get more information about why registry cleaners aren't needed.

Thanks to Sari for the explanation
