I'm about to start combofix from safe mode. So far no virus symptoms. Just a few things changed around (ie: My Documents folder open on startup). I'll post combofix log after safe mode scan.

For the startup folder can you try this

Click Start then Run and type msconfig in the "Run" box...click "Ok".
Click on the "Startup" tab". Look in the startup list and remove the check from the box next to EXPLORER.EXE, click "Apply" then "Ok".
Restart your computer. Upon restart, you may get a Selective Startup dialog box...if you do, check the box in the lower left corner of the window and click "Ok".

OK all finished combofix from safe mode. I've attached the file. strange.... the "my documents" folder didn't open after this reboot.

One thing I forgot to mention is that last night I ran an avast boot-time scan and after the reboot I got the windows message "windows has recovered from a serious error". Is that anything to worry about?

If it happened just once it should not be a problem - a few to go - on completion let me know of any problems at all

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

NetSvc::
tuhsg
ddigw

Driver::
tuhsg
ddigw

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"5057:TCP"=-

3. Then in the text file go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES

4. Save the above as CFScript.txt

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new OTListit log.

Here are the logs I think you asked for. I wasn't sure about the OTListit log. I just ran OTL again without any custom scans/fixes and attached the log file here. Was that right?

Nothing so far. The system seems to be running normally.

I did notice Avast doesn't seem to be running at bootup. I think it is because when I was running ComboFix in safe mode, it kept saying Avast was running even though the shields were off. I ended the avastUI process in task manager because it wouldn't stop running. Would that be the reason? Do you have any tips on getting it to start automatically again?

Other than that everything seems fine.

For Avast you need to run a repair as the run registry key has gone AWOL... Do you know how to do that ?

Looking at that I am a happy bunny ;)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :D

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 22.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u22-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u22-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe ;)

Thanks so much. I'll run the cleans and check it out for 24 hours.

Will the above steps repair the run registry key, or is that something different. If so, can you please tell me how I can do that.

Thanks again.

I'm stuck at the first point... The OTL custom fix only ran for a second or two and now says "Processing complete!" at the bottom but seems to have frozen. The progress bar is full at the bottom but hasn't disappeared, and the taskbar and icons still haven't reappeared on my windows desktop behind the OTL window. Should I just close OTL now and restart the system?

Should I have disabled Avast, or started in safemode before running the OTL fix?

its been half an hour now, and still the same. Clicking on the X in the window does nothing but the mouse cursor moves around. Windows task manager shows OTL is using 9,428K of memory, which doesn't change and avast is using 30,492K. I think I'll just reboot the system from Task Manager...

That was strange... Since I wrote the last entry, an OTL dialog box opened up and said OTL needs to restart the system to finish deleting files. I clicked OK and it seemed to work. Hopefully I didn't mess anything up during the process...
