My computer runs win xp, is a fairly good obedient thing.
BUT
In the past week or so it has begun this whole freezing deal, as in the mouse stops, the CPU stops, and it is a general lock up.
I initially thought it was perhaps caused by running a few too many programs, but it is not limited to the occaisions where I am doing 101 things at once.

I have a Pent 4, it is not overheating (AFAIK) and it otherwise runs like a dream.
Right up til it freezes that is!

i am computer literate (regardless of what this says lol) I dont know the names for all the bits, but point me the right way and I can check it, it just has me beyond stumped.

Thankyou for any help you can give.

Sounds a lot like what mine is doing currently, and I am running Windows XP as well. The mouse stops, keyboard does nothing, and it won't respond, except for hitting the restart button.

I'm just as confused as you are. It will do it randomly, even when it's idle, and if I restart it, it will likely do it again sometime soon, three or four times until it finally quits for awhile...then it will randomly do it again.

Does this sound anything like your problem?

Yes that sounds pretty much what mine is doing. like for instance it is fine now.. but will crash again later I am sure then a few more times.

I wonder what this is about? I have half a mind to email Microsoft and ask if its something to do with the last update from them.

I hate to see someone else having the same problem, but at the same time I am glad that I'm not the only one and I may not have some sort of freak problem that no one knows what's wrong. I've looked over past posts and there's seems to be one or two other people with somewhat similar problems.

My computer is set to auto-update, so I have no idea when my updates are installed...usually I just okay them and go about my business. However, I have not noticed it doing this until I got home from college. I moved my computer home on May 7th, so if it is an update, it's an update that occurred around that time I'm assuming.

Yes thats about when I figure, but at the same time IM not game enough to go and remove the update because last time I did that I ended up with a trojan and 2 virus'! I dont want to play that game.

I will see how it goes. Then email Microsoft.. see if they care lol.

Not to mention, if you remove the update, you'll have to sit at your computer for hours to see when and if it stops locking up. Mine does it so randomly...I swear, I played a game for hours one day and the thing never locked up. But when it's in Windows, it seems to lock up from time to time.

Do you have a network card? Are you on a network at college?

I am seriously wondering if its my network card causing the problem. Because I can play my game for hours and NOT have a single probem! But Windows will lock up.. *sigh*

I was on a network at college. I am not on one at home. So, I have a network card, but it is not plugged up. I disabled it after I got home in order to get rid of the annoying "Network cable unplugged" error, but my computer was also locking up before I disabled the network card. So, I doubt it is the network card, considering mine was in use at college and worked fine.

I have my network card in use all the time. However its not been working well lately.

Sometimes moving a computer can upset things tho... and come to think of it, I recently rearranged my study, and my computer got shifted. Will get my husband to look into the cables and plugs and update the card and see where that leads me.

I have a NVidia graphics card I installed too. I read somewhere on this site that people were having conflict problems with their graphics and network cards resulting in the same problem.

It is so frustrating, knowing that things were working fine and now to have this random stopping. I remind myself that its not so often and if it does it that it is only brief. LOL but Id much rather it NOT do it at all.

I've already searched for updates for all my hardware, even though I have not installed or changed any hardware. I also looked in my computer today to make sure cables were not loose. I don't believe either of those are causing problems, but then again, I may be wrong.

Add another person to your list. Mine is doing the same thing. Here's the series of events that led up to this.

On Saturday I was on my laptop and was listening to They Might Be Giants MP3s on my desktop. Then it made this horrible screeching sound and the system froze. Even the CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK would respond. I pushed the reset button and it reset but it wouldn't do anything, not even post. I pulled hardware out, took it down to the bare minimums, and even cleared the CMOS and it still wouldn't boot or POST. What I found odd was my CPU fan was still spinning, the AGP card was getting power at least since the fan on it was spinning yet the case fans hooked to the MOBO were not spinning. I figured it was a dead MOBO.

I went and got a replacement and decided on the ABIT VT7 since it was in price range and swapped it out. I put the computer back together and Windows wouldn't boot. I ended up formatting the drive and reinstalling windows. So Windows is back on and I didn't do SP2 yet but now it freezes. It seems to happen more when the display is changing faster. Like surfing through websites or paging through photos fast. So now I am suspecting it is either faulty ram or a faulty video card.

I am doing that memory test from microsoft and I haven't done one of these before but so far everything is passing but it just got really slow. So I will keep you posted. If this memory test passes I will swap video cards with another computer and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't I really don't know whats wrong. Maybe someone here has some insight to this.
