When you click C: > windows; in the folder that opens up can you see the folders inf, ie8, pif, msdownld.tmp? They are also half grayed. If you see them but do not see installer then we know that we have a system problem. If you don't see any of them then I suspect that unchecking hidden protected system files was not done correctly. Please double check.
