Hi All,

Recently the PC turned itself off and restart itself. After that I would need to manually boot up and from there it would then freeze at the dektop and its got to the point where now it will not even get there, the PC just sits at the "COMPAQ" setup screen. It gives me the option to start in safe mode or do a PC recovery but the mouse and keyboard have stopped working and even trying others makes no difference.

I have bought one of the Windows XP boot CD's off ebay but the instructions included the CD and all other advice have asked you to press this button or that button on the keyboard, is there anything else I can try??? not sure if this is a longshot but any help would be appreciated..

thanks

Either you r hard drive has died or the MBR ( master boot record) is corrupted. I would tend to think it is a bad hard drive simply because by your statement it has slowly got worse. This makes me think that sectors on the drive are going bad causing the problem. The easist way to tell is find a friend with a spare HD andinstall it. then use a Linux bootable CD to see if it will run on the computer. If it does then the HD was the problem.
