I've no idea what happened to get here! I just suddenly realized all my program icons now look like Word file icons and when I try to go to any of them, it just initiates the Word program and opens as a text file in the Word format.

The only clue might be this: the computer is new to me from someone else, has Windows 7 on it, and the Word program is one of those "try it free for 18 documents" setups. It does bring these up in a window for conversion (a key word, I thought) but the types of possible conversions don't seem to be relevant to the problem I'm having.

Anyone know how I can get these icons back to what they need to be so I can initiate the programs?

Hi there, :D Welcome to the forums!
Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Sounds like you have a problem with your shortcut associations. Should be easy to fix.

Download the attached file below:

Attached File  lnkFix.txt   2.14KB   11890 downloads

  • Double click on the file to open it in Notepad
  • Please do not change anything.
  • Go to File > Save As:
    • On the Save In: click on the drop-down menu and select Desktop
    • In File Name: type in RegFix.reg
    • In Save as Type: use the drop-down menu to change it to All Files
    • Click Save
  • Close Notepad
You should now have an icon like this on your desktop:
Posted Image
If not, then you have saved it wrong.
  • Right-Click on RegFix, and select Merge
  • A confirmation prompt will appear. Click Ok.
